LCR odds vs. Bunco, Craps, Blackjack, and Roulette

If you’re rolling the dice, are you better off in a Vegas casino or at your kitchen table playing a game of Left Center Right?

LCR gives you the best odds for staying in the game

On each die, you’ve got a 1-in-6 chance to land on either Left, Center, or Right. You’ve got a 1-in-2 chance of landing on a stay dot.

Meaning on any given die, there’s a small chance you pass left or right, or lose it to the center. Half the time, nothing happens. In total, you’ll lose a chip 50% of the time and keep a chip 50% of the time on a single die.

The odds change by turn across 3 dice. You’ll lose 1 or 2 chips 37.5% of the time, or 81/216 times. You’ll lose 3 chips 12.5% of the time, or about a 27-in-216 chance. And you’ll keep all your chips (three dots) 12.5% of the time.

Bunco is your best chance for winning

Bunco gives you a 1-in-6 chance of rolling any single number on a die. Over three dice and while trying to land on the round you’re playing (in round 1 you want to roll 1•1•1, and in round 2 you want 2•2•2 to roll a “Bunco”), you’ve got a 1-in-216 chance.

Your odds of a mini-Bunco are better, where you land on any three-of-a-kind regardless of the round number, at 1-in-36.

Craps odds are slightly better than a coin flip

You have just under 50/50 odds in craps, at about a ~49.3% chance of winning in each round. This gives the house an edge of just under 2%, which is probably a feature, not a bug.

This means Craps gives you slightly better odds than a coin flip since you have a 50.7% chance of losing on any given turn.

Roulette odds

On a typical European table, you’ll have a 1-in-37 chance of hitting a single number. An American table gives the house a little more edge, with a 1-in-38 (2.63% chance) of winning on a spin. Meaning every time James Bond plays Roulette in a European casino, he’s playing with slightly better odds.

Blackjack odds

Unlike LCR and Bunco, where the fate of your roll is almost exclusively determined by chance and luck, Blackjack does introduce some skill.

A skilled player laying the best play for each hand has a roughly 42-44% chance of winning per hand. You get a tie 8-9% of the time and that leaves a dealer win of 48-49% of the time. That sounds like a lot, but the house edge is only about .5% of the time. But that’s for skilled players.

Average players who go with their guts tend to lose to the house 2-3% of the time, which is why Casinos have done the math and have so many Blackjack tables.
